The Game of Thrones creators are writing a new series of Star Wars movies

David Benioff and D.B. Weiss are going from Winterfell to a galaxy far, far away.

Game of Thrones creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss have officially been tapped to helm a brand new Star Wars film series, the franchise announced Tuesday.

There are no real details or release dates for whatever Benioff and Weiss will be cooking up, besides that they’ll be finishing Game of Thrones before they move on to Star Wars, and that their movies will form a separate spinoff series from the ongoing “Skywalker saga” (which includes The Force Awakens, The Last Jedi, and the upcoming — and still untitled — Episode IX).

“We are honored by the opportunity, a little terrified by the responsibility, and so excited to get started as soon as the final season of Game of Thrones is complete,” Benioff and Weiss said in a statement. (What this new might mean for Confederate, their preemptively controversial HBO drama series about a world in which the South won the Civil War, remains to be seen.)

Benioff and Weiss’s series will also be entirely separate from the already announced spinoff series that The Last Jedi director Rian Johnson is currently working on.

If you’re staring at your screen thinking this project means we’re in for a pretty ridiculous number of future Star Wars movies (especially given the fact that we’re also mere months away from the release of a Han Solo spinoff film), take heart: You’re not wrong!

With vanishingly few details about Benioff and Weiss’s upcoming movies to go on, the one solid takeaway here is that Disney and Lucasfilm are going full throttle on building out an entirely new Star Wars universe — one that they are probably hoping can rival Marvel’s ever-expanding stable of reliably bankable superheroes. By bringing in Benioff and Weiss, the Star Wars franchise is betting on a pair of creators who are known for building out someone else’s world, by hiring those creators to help build out Star Wars for the long haul.
