Two arrested for illegal organ transplant in Lahore

The Punjab Human Organ Transplant Authority on Saturday night arrested two, including a doctor, involved in an illegal organ transplant racket in Lahore’s Township area.

According to Express News, police officials have taken Doctor Abid and a manager of local hospital in custody during the raid while remaining hospital staff managed to escape from the scene. The authority believes illegal organ transplant ring consisted of 15 men.

It was revealed during the initial investigation that the suspects created 10 escape routes through operation theaters as contingency plans for police raid.

The country has long been an international hub for illegal kidney trade, but medical and local authorities complain they have been unable to act against the practice, frustrated by ineffective enforcement policies and what they perceive as a lack of political will to crack down.

Organ donation is legal so long as it is voluntary, given without duress or the exchange of money. Local lerics have ruled it Islamic, but a lack of awareness and the pervasive belief that it is taboo for Muslims mean there is a shortage of those willing to donate.
