Prime suspect in Karachi stabbings arrested: police

KARACHI: The prime suspect in the cases of women being stabbed in Karachi has been arrested, a police official said on Sunday.

“Waseem, the prime suspect, has been arrested with the help of the Sahiwal [in southern Punjab] police,” DIG East Sultan Ali Khowaja informed the media.

“After legal formalities, he is being shifted to Karachi for further investigation,” he added.

Sources said Waseem, a resident of Sahiwal, had over 200 cases of a similar nature filed against him in Chichawatni and 30 in his hometown between 2013 and 2014. He was arrested in 2015 but released a year later over lack of evidence.

When the stabbing cases started in Karachi, the city’s police approached their counterparts in Sahiwal. As Waseem was not found at his house, his brother and friend were taken into custody.

Now that Waseem has been apprehended, police will ascertain whether he is involved in the Karachi stabbings or not.

So far at least 13 women have been injured in several incidents in parts of District East – Gulistan-e-Jauhar, Dalmia, Rashid Minhas Road, Pehlwan Goth and PIB Colony – since the incidents began on September 25. The police have also issued the suspect’s picture with brief details about his appearance multiple times, seeking help from the citizens to capture him. They have also announced a reward of Rs1 million for anyone who helps the police trace and arrest the attacker.
