Honesty can only be proved through one’s conduct: CJP
ISLAMABAD: Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Mian Saqib Nisar has observed that honesty is a state of mind which can only be proved through a person’s conduct.
The CJP’s remarks came during the hearing of Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leader Hanif Abbasi’s petition seeking disqualification of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI)’s general secretary Jahangir Khan Tareen and chairman Imran Khan, as members of the National Assembly over allegations of concealing their sources of income.
“If we assume that you [Tareen] were liable to pay tax on leased land then what will the impact be?” apex court judge Justice Umar Ata Bandial asked PTI leader’s counsel Sikander Bashir Mohmand. Upon this, Mohmand replied that Tareen “cannot be disqualified”, adding if the petitioner believed that his client had lied at any point, the occasion should be pointed out.
Define ‘land holding’, SC asks lawyers
On Wednesday, the apex court bench questioned why Tareen did not disclose the income from 18,566 acres of leased land in his nomination papers for the 2013 general elections. Legal experts believe Tareen might face trouble in view of the SC’s July 28 verdict in the Panamagate case – wherein it was held that an entitled salary or unwithdrawn receivable may be considered an asset – as the same principle may be applied in Tareen’s case. However, one point in his favour is that he did not win a seat in the 2013 general elections.
