Bank of Khyber gets acting MD

PESHAWAR: The government of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (K-P) on Wednesday appointed Muhammad Shahbaz Jameel as the acting managing director of the Bank of Khyber.

The decision comes after the provincial authorities terminated ex-MD Shamsul Qayyum’s services over a public spat he had with the provincial finance minister, Jamaat-e-Islami’s Muzaffar Said last year, just 18 days before Qayyum’s term as managing director was set to expire.

Qayyum had published an advertisement in newspapers in April last year against the JI minister, alleging that the finance minister indulged in corruption, illegal appointments, and utilising the bank’s resources for his party and interfering in the bank’s matters.

The JI not only rejected the allegations but also demanded that the ruling Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) axe the MD.

He has worked as the executive vice president since 2006, first at Pak Oman Investment Company and then at United Bank Limited.

He earned an MSc in international business & management from University of Manchester, UK as a Chevening scholar. He has also earned an MBA in finance from University of Toledo, Ohio, United States.

In addition to working for multinational and national banks, Jameel has also worked for Privatisation Commission, Government of Pakistan for banking sector reforms.
