Army chief has right to comment on economy: PM Abbasi

Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi said Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Qamar Javed Bajwa has right to express his opinion on the country’s economic situation.

“When everyone is free to give his opinion on economy then why not the army chief [Gen Qamar],” PM Abbasi remarked on a TV channel on Monday night.

The premier’s remarks came in the backdrop of the widening controversy created after the COAS recent comments on national economy followed by the military’s media spokesperson and interior minister’s back-to-back reactions on the same issue.

Last week while expressing his concern over the country’s ‘sky-high’ debt, Gen Qamar said national security and economy were interlinked. He also called for broadening tax base and bringing in financial discipline to break the ‘begging bowl’.

“It may be the difference of opinion… There is no civil-military tension,” the prime minister said.
